Eating in Whitby - Is It Just Fish?

Mention Whitby to most people and ask them what food they think of, and you can be pretty sure that most of them will say fish and chips.

So is it as good as people say, and is there anything else that's good to eat in Whitby?

Fish and Chip Restaurants

Whitby is undoubtedly the home of some of the best fish and chips in the UK, although by no means all of it. Claims of freshly-caught local fish usually have "where available" clauses nearby, but that is inevitable in this age of quotas and limited fish stocks.

More important, perhaps, is how the fish is cooked, and fryers like the award-winning Stuart Fusco of Quayside fisheries know all about this - voted young fish fryer of the year in 2005, Fusco's fish and chips are some of the best around.

Other quality outlets include Trenchers and Mister Chips, and no discussion of fish and chip shops in Whitby would be complete without a mention of the Magpie Caf. The Magpie is amazingly popular, with 45 minute waits for a table routine at busy times. However, it is hard to avoid the feeling that the Magpie is living off its reputation a little - while the fish and chips are perfectly good, there are several other equally good fish restaurants nearby, so do not feel you have to join the Magpie's queue on a busy summer evening - consider trying somewhere else, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Pubs & Restaurants in Whitby

Sometimes, even in Whitby, fish and chips just isn't enough. Whether you just don't want fish, fancy a cosy pub environment, or hanker for something a little more refined, Whitby's pubs and restaurants have a lot to offer.

The Duke of York offers great pub dining in a comfortable, friendly environment. Located at the far end of Church Street, it is nestled at the bottom of the 199 steps and overlooks the harbour. A big menu of freshly-cooked food is available all day - until late evening in summer, making it the perfect choice after a day's walking or sightseeing.

For those looking for something a little more refined, restaurants such as the popular White Horse & Griffin, The Vintner of the Egon Ronay-featured Greens Seafood Restaurant offer a different choice, and all include a healthy mixture of fresh seafood and locally-produced meat on their menus, subject to availability.
